Customizing Word


Customizing Menus

1 To begin customizing menus, click the Tools menu, and then click Customize...
2 To animate the display of menus, at the bottom of the Customize dialog box, click the Menu animations arrow, and then click Unfold.
3 To close the Customize dialog box, click Close.
4 To view the menu animation, click the Tools menu.
5 To continue customizing menus, on the Tools menu, click Customize...
6 To begin adding a command to a menu, in the Customize dialog box, click the Commands tab.
7 To add the Drawing command to a menu, in the Categories list, click Drawing, and then in the Commands list, click the Drawing icon.
8 In the Commands list, point to the selected Drawing command, press and hold down the mouse button, drag the selection to the Format menu, position the insertion bar just below the Object command, and release the mouse button.
9 To close the Format menu, click the Format menu.
10 To begin creating a custom menu, on the open tab of the Customize dialog box, click twice below the scroll box on the scroll bar of the Categories list, and at the bottom of this list, click New Menu.
11 To add the new menu to the menu bar, in the Commands list, click New Menu, hold down the mouse button, drag the selected menu to the right of the Help menu, and release the mouse button.
12 To change the new menu name to GardenCo, on the shortcut menu, in the Name box, triple-click the text New Menu, type GardenCo, and press ENTER.
13 To begin adding commands to the GardenCo menu, in the Customize dialog box, in the Categories list, click once above the scroll box on the list scroll bar, and click Format.
14 In the Commands list, click four times below the scroll box on the list scroll bar.
15 To select the command you would like to add, click Double Underline, hold down the mouse button, drag to the GardenCo menu, position the insertion bar on the empty menu just below the word GardenCo, and release the mouse button.
16 To add another command, in the Commands list, click Word Underline, hold down the mouse button, drag to the GardenCo menu, position the insertion bar just below Double Underline, and release the mouse button.
17 To close the Customize dialog box, click Close.
18 To begin using commands on your new custom menu, in the document, triple-click the heading Preparing the Soil to select it.
19 To apply a double-underline to the selected text, click the GardenCo menu, and then click Double Underline.

Customizing Toolbars

1 To change a toolbar from docked to floating, click the left edge of the Standard toolbar, hold down the mouse button, drag downward until the toolbar floats over The Garden Company logo, and release the mouse button.
2 To reposition the Standard toolbar, click its title bar, hold down the mouse button, drag to the right edge of the window until it is docked as a vertical toolbar, and release the mouse button.
3 To move the Standard toolbar back to its original location, click its top edge, hold down the mouse button, drag to the left of the Formatting toolbar, and release the mouse button.
4 To have the toolbar buttons display on two rows again, at the right end of the Standard toolbar, click the Toolbar Options arrow, and then click Show Buttons on Two Rows.
5 To begin changing the buttons displayed on a toolbar, on the Standard toolbar, click the Toolbar Options arrow again.
6 To see all the possible buttons that you can assign to the Standard toolbar, point to Add or Remove Buttons, and then point to Standard.
7 To remove buttons from the Standard toolbar, click to clear the check marks next to the Format Painter, Drawing, and Document Map check boxes.
8 To add buttons to the Standard toolbar, point to the arrow at the bottom of the submenu, and then click the Print... and Envelopes and Labels... check boxes to insert checkmarks next to them.
9 To save your changes and view the revised toolbar, click the blank space to the right of the toolbars.
10 To restore the Standard toolbar to its default settings, on the Standard toolbar, click the Toolbar Options arrow, point to Add or Remove Buttons, and then point to Standard.
11 Point to the arrow at the bottom of the submenu, and then click Reset Toolbar.
12 To begin creating a custom toolbar, click the Tools menu, and then click Customize...
13 In the Customize dialog box, click the Toolbars tab, and then click the New... button.
14 To name the new toolbar, in the New Toolbar dialog box, in the Toolbar name box, type Scaling.
15 To make the new toolbar available only to this document, click the Make toolbar available to arrow, click GrowingOnions, and then click OK.
16 Notice that Scaling now appears in the list of toolbars in the Customize dialog box. To begin adding buttons to the new toolbar, click the Commands tab.
17 On the Commands tab, in the Categories list, click Format.
18 To view the commands that you will add to the new toolbar, click twice below the scroll box on the Commands list scroll bar.
19 To add a command to a toolbar, in the Commands list, click Grow Font, hold down the mouse button, drag to the blank Scaling toolbar at right, and release the mouse button.
20 To close the Customize dialog box, click Close.
21 To begin using the new toolbar, triple-click the heading Preparing the Soil to select it.
22 To increase the font size of the selected heading by 2 points, on the Scaling toolbar, click the Grow Font 1 Pt button (third button from the left) twice.
23 To hide the Scaling toolbar, click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Scaling.
24 To display the Scaling toolbar again, click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Scaling.
25 To begin deleting the Scaling toolbar, click the Tools menu, and then click Customize...
26 In the Customize dialog box, click the Toolbars tab.
27 In the Toolbars list, click once below the scroll box on the Toolbars list scroll bar, click Scaling, and then click Delete.
28 In response to the message asking if you are sure you want to delete the Scaling toolbar, click OK.

Automating Tasks Using Macros

1 To begin creating a macro, click the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Record New Macro...
2 To name the macro, in the Record Macro dialog box, in the Macro name box, type Letter.
3 To specify a location to store the macro, click the Store macro in arrow, and then click TGC LetterHead (document).
4 To assign the macro to a menu item, in the Assign macro to section, click the Toolbars button.
5 In the Customize dialog box, in the Commands list, click Project.NewMacros.Letter, hold down the mouse button, drag to the GardenCo menu, position the insertion bar below Word Underline, and release the mouse button.
6 To close the Customize dialog box, and begin recording the macro, click Close.
7 Notice that the Stop Recording toolbar appears floating over the document, indicating that you have begun recording the macro. To begin adding keystrokes to the macro, in the document, type The Garden Company, and press ENTER.
8 To add menu commands to the macro, click the Insert menu, point to Autotext, point to Salutation, and then click To Whom it May Concern.
9 To add additional keystrokes and menu commands to the macro, press ENTER three times, click the Insert menu, point to Autotext, point to Closing, and then click Respectfully yours.
10 To add signature text, press ENTER three times, and type Catherine Turner.
11 To add your job title, press ENTER once, and type Owner.
12 To add your company name, press ENTER once, and type The Garden Company.
13 To stop recording the macro, on the Stop Recording toolbar, click the Stop Recording button (button on the left).
14 To begin testing the new macro, you will need to position the insertion point where you want the result of the macro to be displayed, so press ENTER.
15 To run the macro here, click the GardenCo menu, and then click Project.NewMacros.Letter.

Customizing Macro Tasks

1 To begin editing a macro, click the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Macros...
2 In the Macros dialog box, in the list of macros, notice that Letter is selected, and click Edit.
3 To scroll to the bottom of the Microsoft Visual Basic - TGCLetterhead - NewMacros (Code) window, click once below the scroll box on the vertical scroll bar.
4 To insert a blank line into the code, click to the left of the text Selection.TypeText Text:="Catherine Turner", and then press ENTER.
5 To insert an instruction that tells the program to display all the text that follows in bold, press the UP arrow key, and then type Selection. (including the period)
6 In the menu that appears, click six times below the scroll box on the scroll bar and double-click Font.
7 To continue with the instruction, press the PERIOD key, and then, in the menu that appears, double-click Bold.
8 To complete the new line of instruction, press SPACEBAR and type = wdToggle.
9 To close the Visual Basic Editor and save the change made to the macro, click the File menu, and then click Close and Return to Microsoft Word.
10 To run the macro, click the GardenCo menu, and then click Project.NewMacros.Letter.
11 Notice that text at the end of the document appears in bold, as you specified in the macro. To delete the macro, click the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Macros...
12 In the Macros dialog box, notice that Letter is selected, and click the Delete button.
13 In response to the message asking you to confirm deletion of the macro Letter, click Yes.
14 To close the Macros dialog box, click Close.
15 To begin deleting the Letter macro’s corresponding command on the GardenCo menu, click the Tools menu, and then click Customize...
16 Click the GardenCo menu, click Project.NewMacros.Letter, hold down the mouse button, and drag to the blank area of the document window, to the right of the Customize dialog box.
