Understanding How FrontPage Works

Looking Around in FrontPage

1To start FrontPage so you can begin looking around, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, and then click Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003.
2To begin exploring the commands that are available in FrontPage, click the File menu.
3To display all the commands on the menu, at the bottom of the File menu, click the double chevron, as indicated.
4To run a command that will display properties of the new_page_1.htm page, on the File menu, click Properties.
5To close the Page Properties dialog box, click OK.
6To view commands available on a submenu, click the View menu, and then point to Toolbars.
7To close the Toolbars submenu, click the View menu.
8To display a ScreenTip for a button on a toolbar, on the Standard toolbar, place your mouse pointer on the Save button, as indicated.
9To change the way the Formatting toolbar is displayed, drag its move handle, as indicated, to the center of the screen.
10To dock the Formatting toolbar at the left edge of the window, drag the Formatting toolbar by its title bar to the left edge of the screen until it is vertical.
11To move the Formatting toolbar to its original location, drag its move handle, as indicated, to below the Standard toolbar at the top of the window.
12To open the Drawing toolbar, click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Drawing.
13To view the commands on the Drawing toolbar, at the right end of the Drawing toolbar, click the Toolbar Options button, as indicated, point to Add or Remove Buttons, and then point to Drawing.
14To remove commands from the Drawing toolbar, in the list of commands, click Draw, click Select Objects, and then click AutoShapes.
15Notice that buttons for the commands you just removed no longer appear on the Drawing toolbar. To return the toolbar to its original state, at the bottom of the list, click Reset Toolbar.
16To close the Drawing toolbar, click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Drawing.
17To close the new_page_1.htm file, click the File menu, and then click Close.
18To exit FrontPage, click the File menu, and then click Exit.

Exploring an Existing Web Site

1To begin opening an existing Web site in FrontPage, click the File menu, and then click Open Site.
2In the Open Site dialog box, on the Places bar on the left, click My Documents, as indicated.
3In the list of folders, double-click The Garden Company folder, double-click the Webmaster folder, click the GardenCo folder to select the Web site, and then click Open.
4Notice that the Web site opens in Folders view. To view the contents of an existing folder, in the Folder List, click the plus (+) sign to the left of Products, and then click the (+) sign to the left of _overlay.
5To close the Folder List pane, on the Folder List title bar, click the Close button.
6To redisplay the Folder List, on the Standard toolbar, click the Toggle Pane drop-down arrow, as indicated, and then click Folder List.
7To switch to Navigation view and look at the navigational structure of the Web site, at the bottom of the Folders view window, click the Navigation View button, as indicated.
8To change the orientation of the Navigation view display, on the Navigation toolbar, click the Portrait/Landscape button, as indicated.
9To change the drawing size, on the Navigation toolbar, click the Zoom arrow, as indicated, and then click 25%.
10To optimize the navigation display within the current window, click the Zoom arrow, and then click Size To Fit.
11To return to the default navigational view, on the Navigation toolbar, click the Portrait/Landscape button.
12To view a section of the navigational structure, click the Products page, and then on the Navigation toolbar, click the View Subtree Only button, as indicated.
13To view the entire site map again, on the Navigation toolbar, click the View Subtree Only button.
14To close the Web site, click the File menu, and then click Close Site.

Looking at a Web Site in Various Ways

1To begin looking at a Web site in different views, at the bottom of the window, click the Remote Web site View button.
2Notice that because the Web site has not yet been published, the view is blank. To switch to Reports view and display the site’s Site Summary report, at the bottom of the window, click the Reports View button.
3To display an individual report, in the Site Summary report, click the Internal hyperlinks link.
4In the message box that appears asking whether you want FrontPage to verify the hyperlinks, click Yes.
5To return to the Site Summary report view, on the Reports toolbar, click Hyperlinks, and then click Site Summary.
6To switch to Hyperlinks view and display the hyperlinks to and from any selected page in the open Web site, at the bottom of the current window, click the Hyperlinks View button.
7To display hyperlinks on the site’s home page, in the Folder List, click the index.htm file.
8To display hyperlinks on another page, in the Folder List, click the products.htm file.
9To switch to Tasks view and display a reminder list of things that need to be done in the open Web site, at the bottom of the working window, click the Tasks View button.
10To open an uncompleted task, in the reminder list, double-click the task titled Finalize GardenCo logo.
11Notice that this task is assigned to you. To close the Task Details dialog box, click OK.
12To mark the task titled Finalize GardenCo logo as complete, click the Edit menu, point to Tasks, and then click Mark Complete.

Exploring an Existing Web Page

1To open a Web page in Page view, in the Folder List, double-click the contact.htm file.
2Notice that the page opens in the Design pane. To view the Web page in the Code pane, at the bottom of the Page view editing window, click the Show Code View button, as indicated.
3To view the Web page in the Split pane, at the bottom of the Page view editing window, click the Show Split View button, as indicated.
4To view the Web page in the Preview pane, at the bottom of the Page view editing window, click the Show Preview View button, as indicated.
5To switch your view back to the Design pane, at the bottom of the Page view editing window, click the Show Design View button, as indicated.
6To close the contact.htm page, click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the Page view editing window.
