Working with Slides

Creating Slides and Revising Their Layouts

1To add a second slide in the presentation, on the Formatting toolbar, click the New Slide button.
2To add a third slide, on the Insert menu, click New Slide.
3To display the presentation's outline, in the Outline/Slides pane, click the Outline tab.
4To enter a title for Slide 1, click to the right of the slide's icon, and for the purposes of this exercise, press SPACEBAR to have the title typed for you.
5To enter a title for Slide 2, click to the right of the slide's icon, and press SPACEBAR to have the title typed for you.
6To add another slide to the presentation, press the ENTER key.
7To enter the new slide's title, press SPACEBAR to have the title typed for you.
8To enter a title for Slide 4, click to the right of the slide's icon, and press SPACEBAR to have the title typed for you.
9To add a fifth slide to the presentation, press the ENTER key.
10To change Slide 5 into a bullet on Slide 4, press the TAB key.
11To enter the text of the bullet, press SPACEBAR to have the text typed for you.
12To create another bullet, press ENTER.
13To enter the rest of the bulleted list, press SPACEBAR to have the list typed for you.
14To change the fourth bullet to a new slide, hold down the SHIFT key, and press the TAB key.
15To enter a title for the new slide, press SPACEBAR to have the title typed for you.
16To add a sixth slide to the presentation, on the Formatting toolbar, click the New Slide button.
17To enter a title for the new slide, in the Slide pane, click the title placeholder, as indicated, and then press SPACEBAR to have the title typed for you.
18To enter the slide's bullet points, in the Slide pane, click the text placeholder, as indicated, and press SPACEBAR to have the text typed for you.
19To add a subpoint, press the ENTER key, and then press the TAB key.
20To enter the text of the subpoint, press SPACEBAR to have text typed for you.
21To change the layout of the slide in order to add a second column of text, in the Slide Layout task pane, click the Title and 2-Column Text thumbnail, as indicated.

Editing Text

1To edit the slide's title, in the Slide pane, click the title placeholder, double-click Training, and press DELETE.
2To edit the slide's first bullet point, on the Outline tab, double-click training, and press the BACKSPACE key.
3To select the bullet point on the fourth slide for editing, on the Outline tab, click the bullet to the left of the bullet point.
4To replace the bullet point's current text, for purposes of this exercise, press SPACEBAR to have the text typed for you.
5To break this text into two bullet points, click at the right end of the word free (to the left of the period), press ENTER, and then press DELETE twice.
6To delete a slide, click the scroll down arrow on the outline pane, as indicated, click the Slide 5 icon, click the Edit menu, and click Delete Slide.
7To reverse your last action, on the Standard toolbar, click the Undo button, as indicated.
8To restore the change, on the Standard toolbar, click the Redo button, as indicated.
9To change the order of the bullet points on Slide 3, on the outline pane, click the bullet to the left of the text Hands-on training, and drag the selected text to the left of the word Full in the third bullet.
10To resize the text object on this slide, click any of the three bullets to select the text object, and then position the pointer over the selection box's bottom middle handle, and drag the handle upward to the bottom of the third bullet.
11To move this text object on the slide, point to the top border of the dotted selection box, and drag the box down to the bottom of the slide.
12To deselect the text object, click the blank white area to the left of the selection box.
13To add a text box, on the Insert menu, click Text Box, and then click in the upper-left corner of the gray marbled area.
14To add text in the text box, press SPACEBAR to have the text typed for you.
15To wrap the text inside the text box rather than have it appear on a single line, position the pointer over the right middle handle of the text box and drag the handle to the left until you reach the middle of the top border.

Formatting Text and Text Objects

1To apply bold formatting to a title and subtitle, on the Outline tab, click the Slide 1 icon, and on the Formatting toolbar, click the Bold button, as indicated.
2To change the color of the text, on the Formatting toolbar, click the Font Color arrow, as indicated, and click the Bright Green box, as indicated.
3To apply italic formatting to the subtitle, on the Outline tab, triple-click The Garden Company, and on the Formatting toolbar, click the Italic button, next to the Bold button.
4To change the size of the selected text, on the Formatting toolbar, click the Font Size arrow, as indicated, click once below the scroll box on the scroll bar in the drop-down list, and click 36.
5To select a title without selecting its subtitle, on the Outline tab, double-click the blank area to the right of the word Gardeners.
6To increase the size of the selected text, on the Formatting toolbar, click the Increase Font Size button, as indicated.
7To change the font of the title and subtitle, click the Slide 1 icon, and on the Formatting toolbar, click the Font arrow, as indicated. Press the T key on your keyboard to scroll the list, and then click Times New Roman.
8To deselect the text, click the blank area to the right of Slide 1 on the Outline tab.
9To move through the presentation by clicking the presentation's thumbnails, click the Slides tab, and then click Slide 5.
10To start changing the size of a text object, in the slide pane, click anywhere in the bullet list, and then click the slanted-line selection box.
11To resize the text object so that it occupies only half of the slide, point to the right-middle handle, and when the pointer changes to a two-headed arrow, drag to the left until you reach about the middle of the slide.
12To begin automatically sizing the object to fit its text, click the Format menu, and click Placeholder.
13In the Format AutoShape dialog box, click the Text Box tab, click the Resize AutoShape to fit text check box, and click OK.
14To center the bullet text in the text object, first click inside the content placeholder, click the Edit menu, and then click Select All to select all of the bullet text.
15On the Formatting toolbar, click the Center button, as indicated.
16To begin adjusting the spacing of the text object, click the Format menu, and click Line Spacing.
17In the Line Spacing dialog box, click the Line spacing up arrow once so that the setting is 1.05.
18To set the paragraph spacing, triple-click the Before paragraph box, and press SPACEBAR to have a spacing of 1 typed for you.
19To see how your changes look in the slide, in the Line Spacing dialog box, click the Preview button.
20To close the Line Spacing dialog box without making any changes, click Cancel.

Checking Spelling and Word Choice

1To check the spelling of the text in a slide, on the Standard toolbar, click the Spelling button, as indicated.
2To replace the misspelled word arrangment, in the Spelling dialog box, check that the appropriate spelling, arrangement, appears in the Change to box, click Change, and then click Close.
3To mark a foreign phrase so that it will not be identified as a misspelling, click once below the scroll box on the scroll bar of the Slides tab, click Slide 8, and drag from left to right to select the French phrase je ne sais quoi.
4To choose the language of this phrase, click the Tools menu, click Language and then in the Language dialog box, press the F key on your keyboard, click two times below the scroll box on the scroll bar, click French (France), and click OK.
5To start checking the spelling of the entire presentation, click once above the scroll box on the scroll bar of the Slides tab, click Slide 1, and on the Standard toolbar, click the Spelling button.
6To correct the spelling of the word Maintanance, in the Spelling dialog box, click Change.
7To correct the spelling of the word Bouquays, in the Spelling dialog box, click Change.
8To add a correctly spelled proper name to PowerPoint's supplemental dictionary, check that TGCGardenersOnly appears in the Not in Dictionary box, and click Add.
9To acknowledge that the spelling check is complete, click OK.
10To start checking your choice of words, click once above the scroll box on the scroll bar of the Slides tab, and click Slide 2.
11To search for an alternate word, double-click Comfortable in the title, click the Tools menu, and click Thesaurus.
12To insert a word in place of the selected word, point to the word relaxed, click the arrow that appears, and click Insert in the drop-down list.

Rearranging a Presentation

1To display the slides in Slide Sorter view, in the lower-left corner of the window, click the Slide Sorter View button, as indicated.
2To move a slide, drag Slide 4 to the empty space after Slide 7.
3To move another slide, drag Slide 5 between Slides 6 and 7.
4To display a slide in Normal view so that you can rearrange its text, double-click Slide 4.
5To rearrange words, on the Outline tab, double-click the word treating, drag it to the left of Re-packing on the same line, then double-click the word and, and drag it to the left of Re-packing.
6To correct the capitalization of the line, drag from left to right to select treating and Re-packing, and then, for the purposes of this exercise, press SPACEBAR to have the correct text typed for you.
7To use the Outlining toolbar to rearrange the slides in this presentation, click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and click Outlining.
8To display just the slide titles, on the Outlining toolbar, click the Collapse All button, as indicated.
9To rearrange the slides, on the Outline tab, click the icon for Slide 5, and click the Move Down button, as indicated.
10To display the text of the slides again, on the Outlining toolbar, click the Expand All button, as indicated.
11To switch the order of bullet points, click once above the scroll box on the scroll bar of the Outline tab, click the bullet to the left of Take extra care on Slide 3, and on the Outlining toolbar, click the Move Up button.
12To switch the order of subpoints, click the scroll down arrow on the Outline tab, click the bullet to the left of Stop on Slide 5, and drag the subpoint to the left of Phone for help.
