Getting Acquainted with OneNote

Starting and Exploring OneNote

1To start OneNote, click the Start button, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, and then click Microsoft Office OneNote 2003.
2To display the open folders and sections (files), click My Notebook.
3To close the tree, click My Notebook again.
4To switch to a different section in the active folder, click the General section tab.
5To switch back to the Meetings section, click the Meetings tab.
6To turn off the page header, click the View menu, and then click Page Header.
7To display titles on the page tabs instead of numbers, click the Show Page Titles button in the lower-right corner of the window.

Viewing Existing Notes

1To see the folders in My Notebook, click the File menu, point to Open, and then click Folder.
2To open the Garden Company folder, click Garden Company, and then click Open.
3To see the available sections in the HR folder, click the HR folder tab.
4To move back to the Garden Company folder, click the Navigate to parent folder button, as indicated.
5To see the structure of the open folders, click Garden Company.
6To fully expand the folder tree, click the plus sign (+) to the left of the Info folder.
7To display the contents of the Plants folder, click Plants in the folder tree.
8To move to the previous folder you were viewing, on the Standard toolbar, click the Back button.
9To move forward to the Plants folder again, on the Standard toolbar, click the Forward button.
10To redisplay the contents of the Garden Company folder, click the Navigate to parent folder button twice.
11To reduce screen clutter by closing the Info folder, click the Info folder tab, click the File menu, and click Close.
12To view the notes on a different page of the Meetings section, on the right side of the OneNote window, click the Staff Meeting page tab.

Storing OneNote Data

1To begin creating a new notebook folder, click the File menu, point to Open, and then click Folder.
2To move to the My Documents folder, where you will create the new notebook, on the Places bar on the left side of the Open Folder dialog box, click My Documents.
3To create the new folder, click the Create New Folder button on the toolbar of the dialog box, and then, for the purposes of this exercise, press SPACEBAR to have the folder's name typed for you.
4To enter the name that was just typed, and open the new My Personal Notes folder, in the New Folder dialog box, click OK.
5To open the new folder, in the Open Folder dialog box, click Open.
6To change the default storage location for notes, click the Tools menu, and then click Options.
7To view options for opening and saving, in the Options dialog box, in the Category list, click Open and Save.
8To change the notebook path, in the Paths list, click My Notebook, and then click the Modify button.
9To select the new folder in which you will store notes, in the Select Folder dialog box, click My Personal Notes, and then click Select.
10To complete the process, in the Options dialog box, click OK.
11In the message box telling you that this change will not take effect until you quit and restart OneNote, click OK.

Getting Help from OneNote Help and Office Online

1To get help with a specific task, at the right end of the menu bar, click the Type a question for help box, as indicated.
2To enter your question, for the purposes of this exercise, press SPACEBAR, and text will be typed for you in the Type a question for help box.
3To display a list of topics that relate to your question, press ENTER.
4To display a specific help topic, in the Search Results task pane, click About getting help while you work.
5To expand the Help window, click its Maximize button, as indicated.
6To display all the available information in the Help window, click the Show All link.
7To close the Help window, click its Close button.
8To close the task pane, click the Close button at the right end of the title bar in the Search Results task pane.
9To get help without typing a question, click the Help menu, and then click Microsoft Office OneNote Help.
10To display a list of help topics organized by category, in the OneNote Help task pane, click the Table of Contents link.
11To browse to a topic about side notes, in the Table of Contents, click Taking and Formatting Notes, click Side Notes, click once below the scroll box in the scroll bar, and then click About side notes.
12To close Help, in the Help window, click the Close button, and then in the OneNote Help task pane, click the Close button.
