Flagging and Finding Notes

Adding and Removing Flags

1To select a note that you want to flag as a task that you need to perform, point to the first note, and click the top edge of the note container.
2To assign a To Do flag to the note, on the Standard toolbar, click the Note Flag (To Do) button, as indicated.
3To apply a different flag to another note, click the top edge of the second note container, and on the Standard toolbar, click the Note Flag arrow, and then click Remember for later.
4To assign a Question flag to a note, click the top edge of the third note container, and on the Standard toolbar, click the Note Flag arrow, and then click Question.
5To apply the same flag to another note, click the top edge of the last note container, and on the Standard toolbar, click the Note Flag (Question) button.
6To indicate that you have completed the task in the first note, click the To Do flag to insert a check mark.
7To remove the flag from the second note, click the top edge of the note container, and on the Standard toolbar, click the Note Flag arrow, and then click Remove Note Flags from Selection.
8To cancel the selection so that you can check that the flag has been removed, click the blank area below the last note.

Creating Custom Flags

1To start creating a custom note flag, click the Format menu, point to Note Flags, and then click Customize My Note Flags.
2To create a new flag, in the Customize My Note Flags task pane, click Undefined (Ctrl+6) in the Current note flags list, and then click Modify.
3To name the flag, in the Modify Note Flag dialog box, check that Undefined is selected in the Display name box, and then, for the purposes of this exercise, press SPACEBAR to have the name typed for you.
4To assign a symbol to the flag, click the Symbol arrow, and then click the Smiley symbol on the right side of the symbol palette.
5To assign a font color to the flag, click the Font Color arrow, and then click the Indigo box, as indicated.
6To assign a highlight color to the flag, click the Highlight Color arrow, and then click the Sky Blue box, as indicated, in the color palette.
7To complete the custom flag, in the Modify Note Flag dialog box, click OK.
8To hide the Customize My Note Flags task pane, click its Close button.
9To apply the new flag to a note, click the top edge of the fourth note container, and on the Standard toolbar, click the Note Flag arrow, and then click Delegated.
10To cancel the selection of the note and see the effect of the new flag, press the ESC key.

Searching for Flagged Notes

1To open the Note Flags Summary task pane, on the Standard toolbar, click the Note Flags Summary button, as indicated.
2To list the flagged notes in the entire notebook, in the Note Flags Summary task pane, click the Search arrow, and then click My entire notebook.
3To display only incomplete To Do flags, click to select the Show only unchecked items check box. To see all flagged notes again, click to clear the Show only unchecked items check box.
4To arrange notes by title instead of flag type, click the Group note flags by arrow, and then click Title.
5To search for all the notes you flagged yesterday, click the Search arrow, and then click Yesterday's notes.
6To arrange yesterday's notes by type of flag, click the Group note flags by arrow, and then click Note Flag Name.
7To display a note from the search results, in the list in the Note Flags Summary task pane, click the second Question note.
8To create a summary page of the notes you flagged yesterday, click Create Summary Page.

Searching for Notes

1To search for notes containing a specific word, click the Type text to find box, and then, for the purposes of this exercise, press SPACEBAR to have the word typed for you.
2To restrict the search to the current section, click the Change Search Scope arrow, as indicated, and then, in the Search in list, click Current Section.
3To run the search, click the Find button, as indicated.
4To close the message box that tells you OneNote found no instances of the word rose in the current section, click OK.
5To open a different section, click the Navigate to parent folder button as indicated, click the Info folder tab, and then click the Plants folder tab.
6To run the same search on the new section, click the Find button.
7To move to the next instance of the word rose, on the Find toolbar, click the Next Match button as indicated.
8To clear the search results, on the Find toolbar, click the Clear Find Highlighting button, as indicated.
9To search the entire notebook for instances of the word rose, click the Change Search Scope arrow, click My Entire Notebook, and then click the Find button.
10To view a list of all the notes in the notebook where the word rose appears, on the Find toolbar, click View List.
11To open one of the pages containing a note with the word rose, in the search results list, click Kim.
12To sort the pages in the search results list alphabetically, click the Sort list by arrow, and then click Title.
