Creating a Word Document


Getting Started with Word

1 To open Microsoft Word, click the Start button on the Windows taskbar, point to All Programs, and click Microsoft Word.
2 To view a list of the task panes available in Word, click the Other Task Panes arrow and look at the contents of the menu.
3 To hide the menu, press the ESC key.
4 To hide the New Document task pane, click the Close button on the title bar of the task pane.
5 To display the New Document task pane again, click the View menu and click Task Pane.
6 To find out how to get help while working, click in the Ask a Question box on the right side of the menu bar.
7 Type How do I use help?, and press the ENTER key.
8 To select the Help topic to view, click About getting help while you work in the list.
9 Notice that the Microsoft Word Help window opens, and click the Ask a Question box link in the right pane of the window.
10 Notice that additional information about the Ask a Question box is displayed, and click the Close button on the title bar of the Microsoft Word Help window.
11 To show the Office Assistant, click the Help menu and click Show the Office Assistant.
12 Notice that an animated paper clip appears, and click the Office Assistant.
13 To look for some information using the Office Assistant, type How do I create a document and click the Search button.
14 To select and view the relevant topic, click the Create a document link in the list.
15 Notice that the Microsoft Word Help window opens, displaying the contents of the Create a document topic, and click the Close button on the title bar of the window.
16 To hide the Office Assistant, click the Help menu and click Hide the Assistant.
17 When prompted to state whether you want to hide or turn off the Office Assistant, click the Yes, turn me off option.

Creating and Saving a Document

1 To create a document, click the New Blank Document button on the Standard toolbar.
2 To start entering text in the new document, type Gardeners, Get Your Garden Tools Ready! and press the ENTER key twice.
3 To draft the first paragraph of the catalog inside cover, type With spring just around the corner.
4 To save the document, click the Save button on the Standard toolbar.
5 Notice that the Save As dialog box appears because this document has not been saved before and that the contents of the My Documents folder are displayed in the Save in box, and double-click the Catalog folder.
6 To name the file, double-click Gardeners in the File name box, type Catalog Inside Cover Draft, and then click the Save button.
7 To save the file in a different format so that others who do not use Word 2002 will be able to open and view the document, click the File menu and click Save As.
8 To create a folder in which to store the file saved in an older format, click the Create New Folder button on the Save As dialog box.
9 In the New Folder dialog box, type For Reviewers in the Name box and click OK.
10 To save the file in a different file format, click the Save as type arrow, click twice below the scroll box on the scroll bar, click Word 97-2002 & 6.0/95-RTF in the list, and then click the Save button.

Working with an Existing Document

1 To open an existing document, click the Open button on the Standard toolbar.
2 In the Open dialog box, double-click the Mailings folder and double-click the Garden Map Kit Mailing document.
3 To move the insertion point to a different location, click to the right of the colon that follows the words Dear Garden Company Friend.
4 To move the insertion point to the beginning of the line, press the HOME key.
5 To move the insertion point to the left of the word Garden, press the RIGHT ARROW key five times.
6 To place the insertion point in the first paragraph, press the DOWN ARROW key twice.
7 To move the insertion point to the end of the first line of text in the first paragraph, press the END key.
8 To move the insertion point to the end of the document, hold down the CTRL key and press the END key.
9 To move the insertion point to the beginning of the document, hold down the CTRL key and press the HOME key.
10 To quickly scan the contents of the entire document, click and drag down the scroll box to the bottom of the vertical scroll bar, and then release the mouse button.
11 To move the contents displayed up by one screen, click above the scroll box on the vertical scroll bar.
12 To move the insertion point to the beginning of the document, hold down the CTRL key and press the HOME key.
13 To move the insertion point using a button, click the Select Browse Object button at the bottom of the vertical scroll bar and click the Browse by Page button on the palette.
14 To open a second document, click the Open button on the Standard toolbar.
15 In the Open dialog box, click the Up One Level button, double-click the Catalog folder, and then double-click the Catalog Inside Cover Draft document.
16 To display the two Word documents currently open, click the Window menu and click Arrange All.
17 To close the Catalog Inside Cover Draft document, click the Close button on the title bar of the document window.
18 To fully display the Garden Map Kit Mailing document once again, click the Maximize button on the title bar of the document window.

Editing a Document

1 To start editing the Garden Map Kit Mailing document, double-click the word Early in the first document heading.
2 To delete the selected word and create a paragraph, press the ENTER key.
3 To add text to the end of the line, press the END key, press the SPACEBAR, and then type Has Arrived!
4 To delete a sentence, press the DOWN ARROW key four times, hold down the CTRL key, click anywhere in the first sentence, and then press the DELETE key.
5 To restore the deleted sentence, click the Undo button on the Standard toolbar.
6 To select the contents of a paragraph, click below the scroll box on the scroll bar, click in the selection area to the left of the words Happy Gardening!, and click the Copy button on the Standard toolbar.
7 To display the Office Clipboard, click the Edit menu and click Office Clipboard, and notice that the Office Clipboard task pane appears, displaying the chunk of text you just copied.
8 To paste the copied text to another location in the document, hold down the CTRL key, press the END key, and then click Happy Gardening! in the Click an item to paste list in the Office Clipboard.
9 To close the Office Clipboard, click the Close button on the title bar of the task pane.
10 To display and select a paragraph to move to a different location in the document, click above the scroll box on the scroll bar and triple-click the paragraph that starts with the words The Garden Company welcomes your comments.
11 To move the selected paragraph, click and hold down the left mouse button, drag down the paragraph to place it above the Happy Gardening! paragraph, and then release the left mouse button.

Replacing Text in a Document

1 To start customizing the default AutoCorrect entries to better suit your needs, click the Tools menu and click AutoCorrect Options.
2 In the AutoCorrect Options: English (U.S.) dialog box, make sure that the AutoCorrect tab is displayed and clear the Capitalize first letter of sentences check box to ensure that Word won't capitalize a letter or word that follows a period.
3 To create a custom AutoCorrect entry, click in the Replace box and type gc.
4 Press the TAB key, and type The Garden Company in the With box.
5 To add the custom entry to the existing correction list, click the Add button.
6 To close the AutoCorrect: English (U.S.) dialog box, click OK.
7 To place the insertion point at the end of the document, hold down the CTRL key and press the END key.
8 To try out the custom AutoCorrect entry you just created, type gc and press the SPACEBAR.
9 To move the insertion point to the beginning of the document, hold down the CTRL key and press the HOME key.
10 To replace one string of text with another throughout the document, click the Edit menu and click Replace.
11 In the Find and Replace dialog box, type Garden Map Kit in the Find what box, press the TAB key, and then type Interactive Garden in the Replace with box.
12 To look for the first instance of the words to replace, click the Find Next button.
13 To replace every occurrence of Garden Map Kit with Interactive Garden, click the Replace All button.
14 When prompted to acknowledge that 10 replacements were made, click OK.
15 To close the Find and Replace dialog box, click the Close button on the title bar of the dialog box.
