Getting to Know FrontPage


Understanding FrontPage

1 To open FrontPage, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Microsoft FrontPage.
2 The Page view editing window displays a blank page. To close the New Page or Web task pane, in the upper-right corner of the Task Pane, click the Close button.
3 To view the commands available on a menu, click the File menu.
4 Notice that dimmed commands are unavailable and arrowheads near commands indicate submenus. To view the submenu of the New command, move the mouse pointer, and keep it over the New command.
5 To view a dialog box associated with a command followed by an ellipsis (...), on the File menu, click Import...
6 To close the Web Site Templates dialog box, click Cancel.
7 To view the nextmenu, click the Edit menu.
8 To view the remaining menus, position the mouse pointer over the View menu, and then, on the menu bar, move the mouse to the right, over each menu name.
9 To open the Help file, on the open Help menu, click Microsoft FrontPage Help.
10 Observe the information available on the Contents tab. To view the information on the next tab, on the Microsoft FrontPage Help window, click the Answer Wizard tab.
11 To replace the default text in the What would you like to do? box with a question, type search help, and then click the Search button.
12 To read about FrontPage Help, in the About getting help while you work pane, click Ask a Question box.
13 After reading the contents of the Help topic, click the Index tab.
14 To close the Help window, click the Close button, in the upper-right corner of the window.
15 To display the Toolbar menu, click the View menu, and point to Toolbars.
16 Notice that the active Standard and Formatting toolbars are selected on the Toolbar menu. To display ScreenTips for some of the toolbar items, click outside the menu, then, on the Standard toolbar, move the mouse pointer over the first button on the left.
17 To relocate a toolbar, move the mouse pointer over the left border of the Formatting toolbar so that the pointer turns into a four-headed arrow, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the mouse down to dock the Formatting toolbar on the left side of the window, and then release the mouse button.
18 To view the Drawing toolbar in its default location at the bottom of the screen, click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Drawing.
19 To open the Drawing toolbar command list, click the arrow at the right end of the Drawing toolbar, point to Add or Remove Buttons, and then point to Drawing.
20 To remove buttons from the Drawing toolbar, click the AutoShapes, Line, and Arrow buttons.
21 To return the toolbar to its original state and close the list, click Reset Toolbar.
22 To close FrontPage, click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the FrontPage window.
23 To verify that your toolbar changes are still in effect, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to All Programs, and click Microsoft FrontPage.
24 To select the Formatting toolbar, position the mouse pointer over the right border of the toolbar, click and hold down the mouse button so that the pointer turns into a four-headed arrow.
25 To move the Formatting toolbar to its original location, while holding down the mouse button, drag the Formatting toolbar to just below the Standard toolbar, and release the mouse button.
26 To close the Drawing toolbar, click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and click Drawing.
27 To close the new_page_1.htm, click the File menu, and click Close.

Exploring an Existing Web Site

1 To open an existing FrontPage-based Web site, click the File menu, and click Open Web.
2 To locate the Web site, double-click The Garden Company folder.
3 In the Open Web dialog box, double-click the Webmaster folder, click CohoVineyard, and then click Open.
4 Notice that the new_page_1.htm file closes, and the Folder List with CohoVineyard details opens. To view the contents of the Products folder, click the plus sign (+) that preceeds the Products folder.
5 To view the contents of the images folder, click the plus sign (+) that preceeds the images folder.
6 To view the contents of the private folder, click the plus sign (+) that preceeds the private folder.
7 To close the folder list, on the Standard toolbar, click the Toggle Pane button, and then click it again to open the list.
8 To switch to the Navigation Pane, at the bottom of the Folder List, click the Navigation button.
9 To view all the page titles in the Navigation Pane, move the mouse pointer over the right border of the pane until it changes to a double-headed cursor, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the border to the right until the border is aligned with the Frames menu, and then release the mouse button.
10 To switch back to the folder list using another method, click the Toggle Pane button arrow, and click Folder List.
11 To preview the Web site in your Web browser, in the Folder List, click index.htm, then click the File menu, and click Preview in Browser.
12 In the Preview in Browser dialog box, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 is listed as the preferred browser, so click Preview.
13 To move to the Products page of the Web site, click the Products link.
14 To return to FrontPage, click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the browser.

Exploring an Existing Web Page

1 To open a file in the Page view editing window, so as to explore an existing Web page, in the Folder List, double-click contact.htm.
2 To view the entire page, click once below the scroll box on the vertical scroll bar, view the contents, and then click again below the scroll box on the vertical scroll bar.
3 To view the HTML code of contact.htm, at the bottom of the Page view editing window, click the HTML button.
4 To scroll through the page, click once below the scroll box on the vertical scroll bar, view the contents, and then click again below the scroll box on the vertical scroll bar.
5 To switch back to the Normal pane, at the bottom of the Page view editing window, click the Normal button.
6 To see how visitors to your Web site will view this page, at the bottom of the Page view editing window, click the Preview button.
7 To preview the page in your default Web browser, on the Standard toolbar, click the Preview in Browser button.
8 To close the browser and return to FrontPage, click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the window.
9 To close the contact.htm file, click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the Page view editing window.

Viewing a Web Site in Various Ways

1 To begin viewing a file, in the Folder List, double-click classes.htm.
2 To display the contents of the Web site in Folders view, on the Views bar, click the Folders icon.
3 To view the remainder of the screen, click once to the right of the scroll box on the horizontal scroll bar.
4 To display the Site Summary report and open the Reporting toolbar, on the Views bar, click the Reports icon.
5 To view the navigational structure of the open Web site and display the Navigation toolbar, on the Views bar, click the Navigation icon.
6 Notice the home page icon that indicates the home page of the site. To change the orientation of the navigation structure, on the Navigation toolbar, click the Portrait/Landscape button.
7 To single out one section of the navigation structure, in the navigation structure, click Products.
8 To view the subtree associated with the Products folder, on the Navigation toolbar, click the View Subtree Only button.
9 To see the entire site map again, on the Navigation toolbar, click the View Subtree Only button again.
10 To move to the Hyperlinks view, on the Views bar, click the Hyperlinks icon.
11 To display all the hyperlinks to and from the home page, in the Folder List, click index.htm.
12 To move contact.htm to the center point of the hyperlink structure, in the Folder List, click contact.htm.
13 To see the other hyperlinks from the products.htm page, to the right of the hyperlinks pane, click the plus sign (+) sign next to products.htm.
14 To collapse the hyperlink view, to the right of the hyperlinks pane, click the minus sign (-) next to products.htm.
15 To move to the Tasks view to see the tasks that have been assigned to this Web site, on the Views bar, click the Tasks icon.
16 To view the task details of Investigate FrontPage views, double-click Investigate FrontPage views.
17 To close the Task Details dialog box, click OK.
18 To change the status setting of a task from Not Started to Completed, click the Edit menu, point to Tasks, and then click Mark Complete.
19 To view the task details of the task Finish the book, click the Edit menu, point to Tasks, and then click Edit Task.
20 To close the Task Details dialog box, click OK.
21 To revert to the Page view, on the Views bar, click the Page icon.
