Hosting a Web Site

Configuring and Testing IIS on Your System

1 To begin configuring your computer to host a Web site, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, and click Control Panel.
2 To begin modifying programs that are installed on the computer, in the Control Panel window, click Add and Remove Programs.
3 To change the installed Windows components, in the left pane of the Add and Remove Programs window, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
4 To begin installing new components for Web configuration, in the Windows Components Wizard dialog box, in the Components list, click the down arrow on the scroll bar, and click the Internet Information Services (IIS) check box.
5 To view the installation of the default subcomponents for Internet Information Services, in the Windows Components Wizard dialog box, below the Components list, click Details.
6 To accept the installation of the default subcomponents for Internet Information Services, in the Internet Information Services (IIS) dialog box, click OK.
7 To continue installing the Internet Information Services components on the computer, in the Windows Components Wizard dialog box, click Next.
8 To locate the files required for installation of the Internet Information Services components, in the Files Needed dialog box, to the right of the Copy files from box, click Browse.
9 To select the files for installation, in the Locate File dialog box, click the arrow next to the Look in box, double-click OS HDD (C:), double-click install, click I386, and then click Open.
10 To install the selected files, in the Files Needed dialog box, click OK.
11 To complete the installation of the Internet Information Services components, in the Windows Components Wizard, click Finish.
12 To check if the installation was successful, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, and then click Internet.
13 To display the root Web site of the configured Web server, in the Internet Explorer window, in the Address text box, click to the right of asp, type http://localhost, and then, to the right of the Address box, click Go.
14 To view all the contents of the Getting Started page, in the Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.1 Documentation window, click once below the scroll box on the scroll bar.
15 To display the Welcome to Windows XP Server Internet Services window, in the upper-right corner of the Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.1 Documentation window, click the Close button.
16 To locate the new folder created on the C: drive, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
17 To view the subfolders of the new folder, in the Windows Explorer window, in the Folders pane, click My Computer, click OS HDD (C:), and then click Inetpub.
18 To begin locating the GardenCo Web site, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
19 To copy the GardenCo Web site, double-click the Garden Company folder, double-click the Webmaster subfolder, click GardenCo, click the Edit menu, and click Copy.
20 To paste the GardenCo Web site and view it on the local Web site, in the upper-right corner of the Webmaster window, click the Close button, in the Inetpub window, in the Folders pane, click the wwwroot subfolder, click the Edit menu, and then click Paste.
21 To switch to the Internet Explorer window, in the upper-right corner of the Inetpub window, click the Close button.
22 To view the GardenCo Web site in the local Web site, in the Welcome to Windows XP Server Internet Services window, in the Address box, click to the right of asp, type http://localhost/GardenCo/index.htm, and then click Go.
23 To test the local Web site and view different pages of the GardenCo Web site, on the home page of the GardenCo Web site, click Products, and then click Class Offerings.

Publishing to a Local Folder

1 To begin publishing a Web site to a local folder, click the File menu, and click Publish Web.
2 To begin specifying the location of a local folder, in the Publish Destination dialog box, click Browse.
3 To create a new folder, in the New Publish Location dialog box, to the right of the Look in box, click the Create New Folder button (fifth button from the Look in box).
4 To assign a name to the new folder, in the New Folder dialog box, in the Name box, type PublishLocal, and click OK.
5 To specify the PublishLocal folder as the publish destination, in the New Publish Location dialog box, click Open, and then, in the Publish Destination dialog box, click OK.
6 To publish the Web at the specified location, in the alert box that appears, click OK.
7 To publish the listed files that build the Web site to the local drive, in the Publish Web dialog box, click Publish, and then, in the Publishing FrontPage Components dialog box, click Continue.
8 To review the publishing process, in the message box, click the link Click here to view your publish log file.
9 To view the publish log file and the transactions involved in the publishing process, in the browser window, point to the scroll box on the scroll bar, press and hold down the mouse button, drag the pointer down until it reaches the bottom of the scroll bar, and then release the mouse button.
10 To close the browser window, in the upper-right corner of the window, click the Close button.
11 To view the published Web site, in the message box, click the link Click here to view your published Web site.
12 To view that the Hit Counter Web component is not displayed correctly, in the browser window, click once below the scroll box on the scroll bar.
13 To test another Web component, to the left of the page, click the Search Page link, in the Search Page, click in the Search for text box, type carnivorous, click once below the scroll box on the scroll bar, and then click the Start Search button.
14 To close the browser window and finish publishing the Web site, in the upper-right corner of the window, click Close, and then in the message box, click Done.

Publishing to a Web Server

1 To begin publishing the Web site to a Web server, click the File menu, and click Publish Web.
2 To assign a name to the Web server, in the Publish Destination dialog box, in the Enter publish destination text box, type http://localhost, and click OK.
3 To publish the Web site to the Web server, in the Publish Web dialog box, click Publish.
4 To open the Web site in a browser window, in the message box, click the Click here to view your published web site link.
5 To view the publish log file, in the upper-right corner of the browser window, click the Close button, and then, in the message box, click the Click here to view your publish log file link.
6 To return to FrontPage, in the upper-right corner of the browser window, click the Close button, and then, in the message box, click Done.
7 To begin opening the published Web site, click the File menu, and click Open Web.
8 To open the Web site, in the Open Web dialog box, click the arrow next to the Look in box, click OSHDD(C:), double-click InetPub, double-click wwwroot, and click Open.
9 To begin publishing the local Web server-based Web site to a remote Web server, click the File menu, and click Publish Web.
10 To begin specifying the publish destination of the Web site, in the Publish Web dialog box, click Change.
11 To specify the publish destination of the Web site, in the Publish Destination dialog box, in the Enter publish destination box, type http://.
12 To create a Web site at the specified location, in the message box, click OK.
13 To publish the Web site to the Web server, in the Publish Web dialog box, click Publish.
14 To test the functionality of the Web site, in the message box, click the Click here to view published web site link.
15 To begin previewing the transactions that were included in the publishing process, in the upper-right corner of the browser window, click the Close button, and then, in the message box, click the Click here to view your publish log file link.
16 To view the renamed index.htm home page file, position the mouse pointer over the scroll box on the vertical scroll bar, press and hold down the mouse button, drag the scroll box down until it touches the lower end of the scroll bar, and release the mouse button.
17 To return to FrontPage, in the upper-right corner of the browser window, click the Close button, and then, in the message box, click Done.
