Creating a Diagram


Starting Visio

1 To start using Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Microsoft Visio.
2 To view templates that help you create flowcharts, in the Choose Drawing Type task pane at left, in the Category list, click Flowchart.
3 To display a description of a template, in the Choose Drawing Type task pane, in the Template area, hold the mouse pointer over the Audit Diagram template.
4 To display templates in the Block Diagram category, in the Category list, click Block Diagram.
5 To open the Basic Diagram template, in the Template area, click Basic Diagram.
6 Notice that, to the left of the new diagram, three stencils are displayed, containing masters related to the Basic Diagram template. To view masters in the Backgrounds stencil, click Backgrounds.
7 To close the diagram and stencils, click the File menu and click Close.
8 To redisplay the Choose Drawing Type and the New Drawing task panes, click the View menu, and click Task Pane.

Getting Acquainted with Visio

1 To open a new block diagram with related stencils, in the New Drawing task pane on the right of the screen, in the New from template list, click Block Diagram (US Units).
2 To open a stencil not part of the Block Diagram template, click the File menu, point to Stencils, point to the Visio Extras submenu, and click the Symbols option.
3 To close the Symbols stencil, on the title bar of the Symbols stencil, click the small green icon, and in the list that is displayed, click Close.
4 To display the Blocks Raised stencil, in the Shapes window, click the Blocks Raised tab.
5 To display the Blocks stencil again, in the Shapes window, click Blocks.
6 To view shapes that are not currently visible on the Blocks stencil, click once below the scroll box in the Blocks stencil's scroll bar.
7 To view master shapes at the top of the Blocks stencil again, click once below the scroll box in the Blocks stencil's scroll bar.
8 To insert a box into the drawing, on the Blocks stencil, point to the Box shape, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the shape to the center of the drawing page, and release the mouse button.
9 Notice that the dimensions of the selected shape are displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. To magnify the drawing page, on the Standard toolbar, click the Zoom down arrow, and then click 100%.
10 To view the entire page at once again, on the Standard toolbar, click the Zoom down arrow, and then click Page.
11 To display the Pan & Zoom window, click the View menu, and then click Pan & Zoom Window.
12 To zoom into the Box shape, in the Pan & Zoom window, click above and to the left of the Box shape, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the mouse pointer down and to the right to draw a red rectangle enclosing the shape, and release the mouse button.
13 To enlarge the red box, in the Pan & Zoom window, hold the mouse pointer over the lower edge of the box, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the edge of the box until it encloses about one-third of the page, and then release the mouse button.
14 To pan to the right side of the drawing window without changing the zoom level, in the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the drawing page, click to the right of the scroll box.
15 To scroll back to the center of the drawing window, at the bottom of the drawing page, click to the left of the scroll box in the horizontal scroll bar.

Customizing the Visio Environment

1 To start opening an existing file, click the File menu, and then click Open.
2 To open a drawing, in the Open dialog box, double-click the The Garden Company folder, double-click the Garden Designs subfolder, and then double-click the ExpoLayout file.
3 To hide the rulers displayed at the top and left edges of the drawing page window, click the View menu, and click Rulers to remove the checkmark next to it.
4 To hide the grid, click the View menu, and click Grid to remove the checkmark next to it.
5 To view how Visio hides menu items that you use less frequently, on the Visio menu bar, click the View menu.
6 To display the View menu items that are currently hidden, at the bottom of the View menu, click the double-arrow.
7 To change Visio settings so that it always displays full menus, click the Tools menu, and click Customize.
8 In the Customize dialog box, on the Options tab, click to add a check mark in the Always show full menus check box, and then click Close.
9 To automatically hide the Pan & Zoom window, on the Pan & Zoom window’s title bar, click the AutoHide button (the push-pin), and then move the mouse pointer away from the Pan & Zoom window.
10 To unhide the Pan & Zoom window, point to the title bar of the minimized Pan & Zoom window.
11 To turn off the AutoHide feature so that the window remains displayed, click the AutoHide button again.
12 To merge the Pan & Zoom and Shapes windows, click the Pan & Zoom window's title bar, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag it to the top of the Shapes window, and release the mouse button.
13 To resize the Shapes window, hold the mouse pointer over the border between the Pan & Zoom and Shapes windows, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the border up by about 1 inch, and release the mouse button.
14 To close the resized Pan & Zoom window, on the Pan & Zoom window’s title bar, click the Close button.
15 To view a stencil without the names of master shapes displayed, on the title bar of the Blocks stencil, click the small green icon, and in the list that is displayed, click Icons only.
16 To redisplay the icon names, on the title bar of the Blocks stencil, click the small green icon, and click Icons and Names.

Getting Diagram Help

1 To browse Visio Help topics related to pages, on the Visio menu bar, click in the Ask a Question box, type pages, and then press ENTER.
2 To display information about the drawing page, in the displayed Help list, click About the drawing page.
3 To expand the list of Help categories under Drawing Types, in the Help window, in the navigation pane at left, click the plus sign next to Drawing Types.
4 To expand the list of Help categories under Block Diagrams, in the navigaton pane, click the plus sign next to Block Diagram.
5 To display a list of Help topics about Block diagrams, from the list under Block Diagram, click the plus sign next to Block diagram.
6 To get help on creating a block diagram, in the list of Help topics under Block diagram, click Create a block diagram.
7 To hide the Help navigation pane, on the Help toolbar, click the Hide button.
8 To display the Help and Visio windows tiled side by side, on the Help toolbar, click the Auto Tile button.
9 To close the Help window and expand the drawing page window, on the title bar of the Microsoft Visio Help window, click the Close button.
