Adding Shapes to Diagrams


Working with Block Diagrams

1 To view the rulers displayed at the top and left edges of the drawing page window, click the View menu, and click Rulers to add a checkmark next to it.
2 To view the grid, click the View menu, and click Grid to add a checkmark next to it.
3 To display a ScreenTip of a shape, on the Blocks stencil, hold the mouse pointer over the 2-D single arrow shape, and then, click to hide the ScreenTip.
4 To insert the 2-D single arrow into the drawing, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the shape directly below the Enter auditorium arrow shape, and then, release the mouse button.
5 Notice that the shape has snapped into alignment with the Visio grid. To label the shape, type Enter auditorium.
6 To deselect the new shape, click the blank area just below the Enter auditorium shape.
7 To save the updated drawing file, on the Standard toolbar, click the Save button.

Moving and Sizing Shapes

1 To display the selection handles of a shape, on the drawing page, click the Perennials, Bulbs, and Tubers box.
2 To resize the shape, hold the mouse pointer over the middle selection handle on the right edge of the box, and when a two-headed pointer appears, hold down the left mouse button, drag to the right until this edge aligns with the right edge of the Landscape shape, then release the mouse button.
3 To select multiple shapes, click the top Enter auditorium arrow shape, hold down the SHIFT key, and click the Enter auditorium shape below it, then release the SHIFT key.
4 To move the selected shapes, hold the pointer over the top shape, hold down the left mouse button, drag both shapes down by about half an inch, and then release the mouse button.
5 To move a shape by small increments, on the drawing page, click the Bonsai Display box and press the UP arrow key two times.
6 To scroll to the left side of the drawing, on the horizontal scroll bar of the drawing page window, click once to the left of the scroll box.
7 To drag a shape in a straight line, click the Last Name A-M box, hold down both the SHIFT key and the left mouse button, drag the shape upwards until it centers on the words Registration Area, and then release the SHIFT key and mouse button.

Editing Shapes

1 To insert an arrow into the drawing, on the Blocks stencil, point to the 2-D single arrow shape, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the shape directly below the Last Name N-Z shape, and release the mouse button.
2 To indicate the entrance to the classroom, in the selected 2-D single arrow shape, type Enter classroom, and then click the blank grid area to the left of this shape.
3 To rotate a shape 90 degrees to the right, click the Enter classroom shape, then click the Shape menu, point to Rotate or Flip, and click Rotate Right.
4 To duplicate the selected shape, hold the mouse pointer over Enter classroom and hold down the CTRL key, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the shape to the right by about three quarters of an inch, release the mouse button, and then release the CTRL key.
5 To select a shape so as to edit it, on the drawing page, click the Classrooms and Demos box.
6 To change the Pointer tool into a Text tool, on the Standard toolbar, click the Text Tool button (the black A).
7 To edit the text on a shape, in the Classroom and Demos box, click to the left of the letter C, type Gardening, press the SPACEBAR, and then click the blank grid to the left.
8 To change the Text tool into a Pointer tool, on the Standard toolbar, click the Pointer Tool button.
9 To magnify the drawing page, on the Standard toolbar, click the Zoom down arrow, and then, click 100%.
10 To view the Perennials, Bulbs, and Tubers shape, on the vertical scroll bar of the drawing page, click the Up scroll arrow twice.
11 To select a shape, at the top of the drawing page, click the Perennials, Bulbs, and Tubers box shape.
12 To increase the font size of text in the selected shape, on the Formatting toolbar, click the Font Size arrow, and click 12pt.
13 To view the top of the drawing page, on the page's vertical scroll bar, click once above the scroll box.
14 To insert a curved arrow into the drawing, on the Blocks stencil, point to the Curved arrow shape, press and hold down the left mouse button, drag the shape directly above the Entrance arrows, and release the mouse button.
15 To flip the selected Curved arrow shape horizontally, click the Shape menu, point to Rotate or Flip and from the list that is displayed, click Flip Horizontal.
16 To twist the arrow so that it points downwards, point to the yellow control handle at the tip of the arrow, hold down the mouse button, drag down and to the right until the arrow points directly at the letters tr in the word Entrance, and release the mouse button.

Finding and Adding Shapes

1 To begin locating a new shape to use in a drawing, click the File menu, and click Find Shape.
2 To find Visio shapes related to plants, in the Find Shape window, in the Search for box, type plant, and then press ENTER.
3 The search results show several shapes with a curved arrow icon, indicating they are available on the Web. To view additional plant shapes, in the scroll bar of the Find Shape window, click once below the scroll box.
4 To view all of the shapes on the Furniture stencil, in the Find Shape window, click the Down scroll arrow twice.
5 To select a plant shape, in the Find Shape window, click the Large plant shape.
6 To insert the selected shape into the drawing, in the Find shape window, point to the Large plant shape, hold down the left mouse button, drag the shape to just below the Last Name N-Z box shape, and release the mouse button.
7 To close the Find Shape window, on the Find Shape window's title bar, click the icon in the left corner, and in the shortcut menu that is displayed, click Close.

Saving Drawings

1 To select a shape, at the bottom of the drawing page, click the white box shape.
2 To add text to the selected shape, type Demo Area, and then click the blank green area just above the selected shape.
3 To begin saving the drawing, click the File menu, and then click Save.
4 To specify the folder where you want to save this file, in the Save As dialog box, click Desktop, and then, double-click the Drafts folder.
5 To rename the file, double-click the text in the File name box, type ClassroomLayout, and click Save.
6 To revise the title to the drawing, in the Summary tab of the Properties dialog box, in the Title box, click between the m and the L in ClassroomLayout, and then press the SPACEBAR.
7 To specify the subject of the drawing, press the TAB key, and in the Subject box, type Garden Expo 2003.
8 To save changes to the properties of the file, in the Properties dialog box, click OK.
9 Notice that the file name, ClassroomLayout:Page-1 is displayed in the title bar at the top of the Visio window. To redisplay the properties of this drawing, click the File menu, and click Properties.
10 To close the Properties dialog box, click OK.
11 To begin saving the drawing as read-only so that no further changes can be made to it, click the File menu, and then click Save As...
12 In the Save As dialog box, click the Save down arrow, and then, click Read only.
13 In the box asking whether you want to overwrite the existing file, click Yes.
